Operation Grenade (Page 2)

The ‘order of attack’ came for the 134th Infantry Regiment on the 26th of Feb. 1945.

German troops of the 343rd I.R. / 183rd I.D. were defending the Hilfarth sector.

The major problem for the G.I.’s was the presence of barbed wire and mine fields on the approaches to Hilfarth. The 1st Battalion had to take Hilfarth, to cross the Ruhr and push towards Huckelhoven. Company K & L would lead the attack with I-company in reserve.

The 137th Inf. Reg. would cross the river on the right side.

On the 26th  A- & B-company entered Hilfarth with some casualties.

A platoon of M-company (heavy weapons) took position on the southwest bank of the Ruhr with the 81mm mortars towards Huckelhoven.

At 08.00  K-company, followed by L-company (3rd Battalion), also crossed the river and began to sweep the houses on the other side of the river.

The enemy launched an unsuccessful counterattack.  45 German soldiers were captured in Huckelhoven. (340th, 216th and 343rd Volksgrenadier Regiment)

Captured Germans in Huckelhoven

On the 27th the 3rd Battalion continued their attack to the northwest in order to flush out the enemy from houses, mine shafts and factory buildings.

K- and L-company took 13 prisoners (343rd Volkgrenadier Regiment) on their way through Siedling and another 51 Germans on Schauffenberg and Gendorf (330th Regiment/183rd Division).

The vanguard of K-company came under hostile fire ; the Germans were hiding in the woods around Wassenberg.
